ISO 9001 certification in India

What the standard requires, what the new 2026 edition means, how the certification audit works and what drives cost. Written for manufacturers, suppliers and service businesses.

What ISO 9001 is

ISO 9001 sets requirements for a quality management system (QMS). It is built around understanding customer and regulatory requirements, managing processes, thinking about risk and improving over time. It applies to any organisation, whatever its size or sector.

The new edition

ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition, was published on 16 September 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015. Organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 will need to transition. The transition rules are set by the international accreditation community, and certification bodies need time to be accredited to the new edition. Before you start, ask any certification body which edition it can audit you against today and when you would have to transition.

Who asks for it

Manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, exporters and service businesses are asked for ISO 9001 by buyers and in some tenders. It is voluntary unless a buyer, contract or regulator requires it. Ask the party that is asking exactly what they accept.

What certification does and does not show

A certificate shows that an independent certification body found your quality management system conforming to the standard, for a defined scope. It does not certify that your products or services meet a product standard, and it is not a product mark or a statutory licence. If a buyer or regulator asks for product certification, testing or a licence, that is a different route.

What implementation involves

  1. Scope and context. Decide what the system covers and who your interested parties are.
  2. Process mapping. Describe how work flows from customer request to delivery.
  3. Quality policy and objectives. Set direction that people can measure against.
  4. Risks and opportunities. Decide what could affect results and what you will do about it.
  5. Documented information. The standard asks for documentation where it is needed, not a fixed set of manuals. Aim for records and procedures people actually use.
  6. Operate and record. Run the processes and keep the evidence.
  7. Internal audit, management review and corrective action. Find and fix problems before the external audit.

How the certification audit works

Certification audits normally run in two stages. Stage 1 reviews your documentation and readiness. Stage 2 assesses whether the system is implemented and effective. Nonconformities must be addressed before the certification body decides whether to certify. Certificates are usually valid for three years, with surveillance audits in between and a recertification audit at the end.

What affects the cost

  • Scope: the processes, products, services and sites covered.
  • Size and complexity: headcount, number of sites and how many processes run.
  • Existing readiness: how much process discipline and record keeping you already have.
  • Implementation support: from a short review to a full managed project, or none.
  • Certification body audit time, which depends on size and complexity and recurs for surveillance audits.
  • Transition to the 2026 edition for businesses already certified.

Consultant fees and certification body fees are separate. We do not publish an average price. The cost guide explains how to compare quotes.

Manufacturing and service businesses

Manufacturers usually have more to control: purchasing, production, inspection, calibration and nonconforming product. Service businesses focus on delivery processes, people competence and customer feedback. The standard is the same and the scope is written for your business.

When ISO 9001 is not enough

Sector schemes such as IATF 16949 for automotive, AS9100 for aerospace and ISO 13485 for medical devices have their own requirements. If a customer names one of them, ISO 9001 will not substitute. Our current focus is ISO 27001 and ISO 9001.

ISO 9001 with ISO 27001

The two standards share a common structure, so internal audits and management reviews can be combined. Each certificate still needs its own scope and audit.

How EasyCorp can help

Depending on your situation, we can talk through whether ISO 9001 fits your buyer's request, help you scope the work, introduce you to a suitable specialist and coordinate the route to a certification body. We do not issue the certificate and we do not promise an outcome.
